Some shrink at the sight of bats. Not us! We adore those sky kittens. We actually have a bat house that can accommodate up to 300 bats, with a pup catcher attachment of course. It towers over the furthest part of our backyard and we sit out often at dusk, ready to take in their beautiful, seemingly erratic, flight of fancy.
Did you know that scientific order for bats, Chiroptera, appropriately translates to “hand wing?” A single bat can eat between 600 to 1,000 insects an hour, sometimes 5,000 in a single night (I personally root for them to target mosquitoes). They'll also rid your lives of tomato hornworms, cucumber beetles, codling moths, and stink bugs.
Oddly enough, bat wings are homologous to the legs of cats. Bats’ wings have a bone structure similar to cats front legs.
Unfortunately cats are quite a common demise of bats.
